Review of Catan Scenarios: Oil Springs (An expansion of Settlers of Catan)

A new expansion is coming soon for Settlers of Catan. The Expansion: entitled Catan Scenarios: Oil Springs adds a new super resource to the game. First off there are only 3 tiles on the board that can contain oil making which make it a very rare resource in any game. Oil is a super resource and can be traded for any two resources thus making it extremely valuable. It also allows the building of the new settlement type the Metropolis.

However use of oil comes at a cost because for every 5^th oil token used total in the game by anyone, a disaster occurs. This adds an interesting mechanic where players actually can all lose, if too much environmental damage happens, but it could just harm your opponents or you!

This newest expansion does seem to have a bit of a political tone to it ,but that doesn't seem to be their intent. they try to balance it, showing that oil is a great resource that has advanced humanity but at the same time it poses some challenges to our environment.

After reading the rules and playing a test game of the new scenario, I think it is an excellent expansion that can add a fun new twist to your classic Settlers of Catan Game.
